About MBur

Welcome to MBur. I don't know how you found us, but I'm glad you did. 😊

MBur started from my love of candles in middle and high school. At the time, like most people, I loved walking into stores like TJ Max, Marshall's, Home Goods, Bath and Body Works, and just smelling the candles. I would always beeline to the candle section to see what new scents people came up with. My favorite scents were gourmand candles and anything that reminded me of my childhood, like strawberries and creme.

The older I got, the more I got into candles and learning how toxic they are, especially to women. Many of the candles I would buy were made from paraffin, and I was shocked to find out that paraffin is a waste product of oil. Then, I found many candles were also made with hormone disrupters to make mixing the fragrance with the paraffin wax easier.

I started looking for alternatives because I didn't want to give up my love of candles, and that's when I came across beeswax. With all the benefits of beeswax, like slower melting candles, natural air purifiers, and biodegradability, those are just some of my favorites. The wax glows the same color as the sun, too. That's cool. But I couldn't find candles that were 100% beeswax. I found soy beeswax blend, apricot beeswax blend, and paraffin beeswax blends, but I wanted just beeswax. And the only one I could find honestly didn't look very aesthetically pleasing to me, and that's a primary reason to buy any candle…right?

A few years later, I'm talking to my boyfriend Donivan, and I tell him I want to make and sell my own candles. He said, "What?!? No one buys candles ". I told him, "People love candles." After going back and forth, he said, "Sure, go ahead, but I'm not helping until you've done all the research and made your first sample" (he knows I'm a creative and creatives tend to bounce around from hobby to hobby a lot lol)

In 2021, I spent months trying to understand candles and make one that wouldn't give me a headache, look good, and smell great. Finally, by the end of the year, I had my first candle. It wasn't my best, but it was a start. So Donivan and I sat down to name the candle brand. After going back and forth, Donivan said we should shorten my name from Melissa Burnette…to MBur for the candle brand. At first, I wasn't sure, but it fit so well that I couldn't say no.

We went to our first craft fair, a pop-up market, and I was scared of how people would respond to the candles. We were so surprised at how many people loved the candles. It made me happy. I wanted to try another one to see if it was an accident, but it wasn't. And people would smell the candles and rave about the scents. That's when Donivan said, "Wow, people really DO like candles!! 😂😂
